Was he perfect? No. Who is? Did he lead the charge agaisnt slavery in actual battle? Yes! Did he lead the charge against racism during his presidency? Yes! So why was his statue targeted? Because this isn't about slavery, racism, the civil war, or statues. Familiarize yourself with Marxism. Look into Saul Alinsky. Look into the pillars of communism. It will all begin to make sense when you educate yourself.
