fixed a sticky ear sock issue

Received my delivery of Uni-Solve Adhesive Remover Wipes from amazon. I went for the cheaper $7 for 20 wipes option instead of the $12 bottle as this was just an experiment in my view.

Here are my thoughts and findings (Disclaimer: I'm not a chemist or a professional. Just someone curious and can use Google):

Uni-Solve is meant to aid in the removal of adhesives from tapes and bandages from the skin.

First thing i did was look at the ingredient/makeup of the wipes.

-C10-11 Isoparaffin - A solvent used for controlling viscosity. Generally found in cosmetics. Low risk.
-Isoproply Alcohol
-Dipropylene Glycol Methyl Ether - Dipropylene glycol finds many uses as a plasticizer, an intermediate in industrial chemical reactions, as a polymerization initiator or monomer, and as a solvent. Its low toxicity and solvent properties make it an ideal additive for perfumes and skin and hair care products
-Aloe Extract
-Fragrance

After doing a quick lookup of that, i felt the solution wouldn't do anything harmful to the Unobtanium (see disclaimer). Upon opening the wipe, it has a very strong smell of alcohol. It's very similar to your standard first aid kit alcohol wipe. It evaporates FAST. Once you take out the wipe, you need to start wiping. I could only get through one earsock and one temple sock for a Flak Jacket with one wipe.

The condition of my Flak Jacket sock kit is poor. They came off of a matte white Flak i purchased off CL. It was super tacky. As in if i just put one finger on it and pressed down, then lifted, the sock would stick to my finger for a second. I've tried the boiling water method, soap and water, and hand sanitizer. Nothing worked. I immediately replaced the sock kit, but kept them around just in case i could do something with them. They've sat for about 4 years in this condition.

After wiping it down thoroughly, i used a towel to pat dry and allowed it to air dry for a few minutes. It does remove some of the tackiness, but not all of it. I tried a second pass to see if that would make any difference and while it did for one earsock, the other earsock ended up tearing and falling apart on me. I then thought maybe the chemicals might have caused a breakdown in the unobtanium, but i think it was just the age of them as one of the socks survived a stretch test. The others did not.

My final thoughts on these is that they work as a cleaner, but don't expect a miracle solution for unobtanium that is past it's prime. I think if your unobtanium is a little tacky/oily, these would work just fine as a cleaner when you're doing your routine cleaning. However, using warm water and a mild soap has worked just fine for me thus far. Also need to note that the solution left a weird waxy film on my hands after it dried. Package instructions do say to rinse after application.

If your unobtanium is super tacky and you feel it's better just to buy a replacement kit, you're probably right.

I also tried a wipe on a pair of Flaks i wore today. The unobtanium is about a year old and is used as my daily pair for regular and sports use. The earsocks are getting on the tacky side and will likely need to replace soon. I was coaching my son's T-ball game today under the sun and the earsocks were a bit oily from use. I used a wipe to quickly wipe down the entire frame (sans lenses) and then immediately rinsed under cold water and they feel clean, but still a bit tacky.

Nice write up!

well that stinks. i wish you had better results.

my electric blue, redline and one of the slate ear socks were sticky as shown in the first photo. I wonder since i was able to use more solution - it worked better? although mine are only a few years old. I do switch them out often to where they don't get used for a good while. I've let them sit since i did this last week and they look the same as they did when i cleaned them. no tackiness and my fingers don't stick to them anymore.

I just wanted to update my review. Since i had a pile of the wipes, i've been using them to clean and they actually do a pretty good job on rubber that isn't bad. It actually feels like it does a better job than hand soap and warm water alone.

I first use the wipe and then immediately wash with hand soap and warm water. I pat dry with a towel and will use compressed air to get into nooks and crannies.

I would say the wipes were a good purchase after all and would recommend them to anyone looking for a cleaning solution for unobtanium.

Also a type 1 brittle diabetic, but no pump for me. I lived hooked up to machines with tubes coming out of my body everywhere. I don't mind 5 to 6 shots of Humalog each day, for me that is better than having to deal with the tubes, lol!!! My last A1C was my lowest yet at 5.8 so I'm doing something right. I realize these aren't the same as the Juliet ear stem rubbers, but I have used boiling or super hot water to clean my rubbers up and remove any of the sticky crap. I use some 97% rubbing alcohol when working on firearms and whatever the hot water doesn't remove a little bit of the alcohol on a QTip will take it off. But be sure to rinse it off real good as it can dry out the rubber if left on. Stay Well My Friend, Sugar ain't no joke!!!!
