How to Clear Monster Dogs

Introduction

I know. I know. I realise you can find this information in several places, but I thought I'd do an easy to find complete set of instructions where trawling through thread comments isn't necessary.

Of course, Oakley make a ton of clear O-matter frames in other models.

But they didn't do it for the Monster Dog or Fatcat.

If you want to stand out from the crowd of bland and commercially available Monster Dogs or Fatcats and be seen in a pair of unique customs that only the premium Oakley aficionado will appreciate, then clearing these frames is the ONLY way to go (disclaimer - the only way to go more unique is to get a professional to hand paint your Monster Dog pair!!! See here for premium specialists!)

Advantages of Clearing Them
- They look wicked
- Breathes new life into imperfect and scratched faded models (which is inevitable if they get used at all).

Disadvantages of Clearing Them
- In bright light, naturally (as with all clear frames), less sunlight is blocked around the lens itself. It's less of an issue for MDs because they have a larger lens, anyway, so you're still getting better lens coverage than say a Madman!!

How To Clear Them
To clear them, use non-acetone based nail polish remover. @anoramonkey had success just using hand sanitiser (I'd try that first).

Takes several minutes only! Use a toothpick and cotton wool soaked in the nail polish remove to get rid of the fade colour off the frame corners. Pay special attention to the lens groove in the orbitals, otherwise, it will look like ā€œdirtā€ has been stuck under the lens edges when the lenses go back in.

Disclaimer - Sometimes even NON-acetone based nail polish remove can make the frame go "cloudy". I think it's because of the age of the frame and degradation of the plastic making it react more strongly to the nail polish remover. I found this happened with the Fat Cat (which was ?an older frame than my 2 MDs).

I am aware of ONLY four frames that can be cleared:-
1. Whiskey MD
2. Brown Fade MD
3. Whiskey Fat Cat
4. Black Fade Monster Doggle

Please note, that the translucent frames CANNOT be cleared. The colour of those particular frames goes right through the O-matter ie. below the surface.

Also, some (but not all) of the whiskey MD icons can have their bronze colour changed to silver (which looks better with the clear frame, anyhow) by using the nail polish treatment. If you DON'T want to do this, then make sure you remove them first. Some of the icons can be cleared. Not all of them.

Other methods to clear (which take a tons of time) include:-
  1. Alcohol pads. It took maybe 4 of them, and 20-30 minutes.
  2. Warm soapy water and a soft bristle toothbrush.
  3. Use your fingernail to scrape the frame paint off. This is the safest method, but it will take absolutely ages!!
Disclaimer - I tried on the whiskey fatcat and for some reason, the nail polish seemed to still slightly affect the surface of the o-matter plastic and made it slightly cloudy or more frosted. But it still cleared. I think it's because the plastic must have changed or deteriorated in some way over time.

Where to Get a Suitable Frame?
Why eBay, of course. But expect to pay between $100-200 for either frame. Fatcats are rarer than MDs. Most people don't realise they can be cleared, so they sell them cheap on eBay because the fade has been scratched off partially. This is GREAT for you!!

Epilogue
Recently, because of the number of "List" threads I do, I have decided to honour various people that have had an impact on my life somehow in the Oakley world. Initially I started buying stuff from this guy. He was extremely efficient, super pro and didn't stuff you around. Gave a money back guarantee no questions asked. He sent me some stuff and I was pleasantly surprised because his lens descriptions in his sales threads actually underestimated what they were in reality (at least on my scale!). He's literally helped me get probably 8 of my grails and given me tons of useful advice. He once saved me over $500 on a sale with someone else, because being a newbie, I had missed an important detail from another seller. I totally trust him and can't speak more highly enough of him. He's right at the top of my Top 20 Best Sellers List on O.F./eBay.

He's been the biggest Oakley influence in my life to date.

So it makes sense to dedicate this MD thread to friend and mentor,

The Radarlock in some colors (Silver being one example) is clear underneath. The stems are foggy off the bat as well. Not sure why.

Hey @cacatman when you mention the translucent frames not able to be cleared with this method, I'm guessing you mean like the Matte Black Ink frames?
Got a few spares of those I was thinking of testing this with.

Yes. Those can't be cleared as far as I know, but you can try. Report your results here!
