Penny Spring Hinge

The arm initially on fitting this didn’t have the “spring” in it & also it expends beyond the normal range which is what, 5 degrees? One thing I did do was I thought the orbital end may have been closed up too much (if you recall the previous owner had inadvertently bent the arm upwards & an effect of that was to spread the orbital opening too much, Then closed it up too much). I gently pushed my Torx driver into the aperture to “spread” it slightly. This seemed to increase the springiness but the hyper extension is still prevalent.

It’s not perfect but it is what it is I guess……….

If you overextend those arms too much, it actually crushes the copper spring cup.and if the new cup isn't correct it will overextend.the Ti won't wear.... the copper cup will. And you have to make sure the original brass bushings are in the arms. If those are missing, it will also hyperextend, because the hole is too big in the arm without them.

I just removed the spring & cylinder & replaced with the pattern part. After slighting enlarging the orbital end it has regained some spring back. It’s not perfect but they’re wearable. If I do buy any more penny frames it will be something to make sure they are on point.
