Lens replacement frequency

wilcal

Here's my first question and it's a simple one. The Oakley Crosslink frames feature easy user replaceable lenses. In fact there's videos all over YouTube showing you how to do this with either the Crosslink or other Oakley frames. My question is what would Oakley expect to be the normal cycle time for doing this? Effectively one could choose one set of lenses in the morning and another set for the evening. Lets say you do this every day for a month or more. Is this excessive? What would Oakley expect on replacing your lenses?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum!
You should consider a Switchlock frame (Jawbone/Split Jacket/Racing Jacket) for ease of swap...
I would expect twice a day for a month would stress anyone's frame eventually, but I doubt Oakley ever seriously considered how many "duty cycles" would be excessive...
Besides the frame, every time you remove/replace the lenses, you run the risk of chipping/scratching/dropping them.
You'd have to be really OCD...

To go the other direction, @wilcal, my "Main use" regular old Radars from 2011 have Fire Iridium lenses in them. I am on the original pair of lenses and they get heavy use, but not abuse. I take them out to clean them once or twice a week with warm water, the other cleanings are in the frame with the cloth and spray. The frames are still quite serviceable and the lenses are obviously used but are not delaminating or bubbling nor are the edges chipped. I have spare FI lenses (along with spares of everything else) and have not even opened them yet.
So as far as service life goes, it's quite long. But I take meticulous care of all my sh!t. Every time I use it.

Wow there's some good info. So over about 5-years the lenses have been in and out of
the frames maybe ( 75 x 5 ) 375 times. And no complaints. Thanks.

I would recommend having multiple frames with a few different lenses for each. That way you dont have to remove so many times.

To be honest it's all about finding a cleaning process that works for you without causing any damage... And being careful... Be very careful.

This.

Less chance fiddling and therefore avoiding whatever potential crap comes with it.
You have an excuse to get another frame.

I personally think the wear on frames with lens swapping is a non-issue now as long as you don't fudge stuff up. Breaks would happen with older O-Matter frames, which some people love for being more rigid, but they're apparently more brittle with age. Oakley has long given mind to interfacing and swap design since then. Their attempts at incorporating Switchlock has been telling of their intents.
