You ain’t wrong! But yeah if memory serves that was a few years earlier. I was there 2000-2002 and general goods seemed readily available…at a price.

I was in Turkey 89-91 and it was that way for sure there and in Eastern Europe at the time. American goods especially jeans, cigarettes, or whiskey were allegedly like gold. Bear in mind I was a card carrying American Diplomat. Black market dealings would have cost me my career 👮‍♂️👎
Turkey is like that for IPhones apparently now, In that you could buy a new one, And put 1k on top if selling it in Turkey🤷‍♂️

@The Koonce ….riiiiight 😏 the guy who taught the morals and ethics course at HQ 😆

Likely will always be the case though on the iPhone scenario. An unscrupulous individual or group will always be able to price gouge in certain markets or situations.

The diplomatic rule as I recall it was convoluted and full of possible pitfalls. It was permissible to sell say a vehicle. Which I did once. Bought a used Jeep to go to an embassy in Central America. Drop shipped it to the Middle East to my next assignment. Rather than bring it home, I sold it there. I had to have the Chief of Mission’s (Ambassador) approval and let the General Services Office (GSO) handle it. If memory serves, I basically sold it for what I bought it for (five years later) to another diplomat. If it was sold for more one would not have been able to retain the profit (I would have been required to say donate the profit to charity) also there would have been a mountain of paperwork. Do it wrong and major censure and likely a career ended.

Don’t hold me to any of this…it’s only been about 30 years ago 😏

Oh…and BUMP! 😉
