Over the top - edition?

Guy adamantly says they came from factory this way
There are product protos that look like that where stuff is taped-on, colors are off etc. I just saw a pair of experimental goggles (again) that have a power pack and fan built in and you could see the wires, etc. but they are not general release- or have SKUs created.

Most Oakley stories from that time were pretty wild- on par with the brand. very consistent though so you can see through a lot of the fakers. Possible that it was a gag -

here's my take: Most "limited edition" were just basically customs for events- AMG SL55 launch had oakley create 55 serialized Juliets to go with the first 55 cars. "the last run"- TB2s were from Corporate pulling all the watches in from the stores as they closed the watch division and put them in a box with a plaque. - same with the 51 Juliet+TB2 combo. some of these releases were official and they had SKUs created some were not.

IF the event had any significance and became lore/legend they become valuable.

I have a few items that are a little bit of both - a one-off Ichiro colorway - one of the first 100 Romeos, -on the other end- a pair of perfect TI-gold Romeos that were handed to a drummer as a perk for playing a gig at Oakley HQ from JJ himself. Had the drummer been as popular as Ichiro was to baseball- I would have made out!
