Most us don’t need a car and we can do without some other products.
Here’s the basics under Biden

Art of the Deal is playing out for our boy President Trump at the moment with all countries playing game besides China, of course.

Which means it is still TBD on what Lux will decide to do with Oakley retail prices, especially if they continue manufacturing most of their eyewear in China 👀

HOWEVER — here’s the big win:
  • The de minimis exemption (which lets us receive shipments valued under $800 without paying import/customs fees) is only being removed for goods coming from China and Hong Kong.
  • So as long as the products are shipped from other countries and the value is under $800, we’re in the clear — no extra fees! 🙌
  • This is a huge advantage for us in the meantime. Especially for myself as I am always trying to get my hands on exclusive Brazilian releases 😭. It's also nice since a lot of the active members we do deals with here are based in Canada, EU, AUS, etc

Yes, I think we all love the idea of “Made in America”…but I don’t think we’re ready for the price tag that comes with it. Paying 2-4x more for stuff with little appreciable rise in wages will certainly make that less appealing to us.
People also don’t realize you only need a certain part of the % of the assembly in America to get that stamp. Much of the products can be made outside of us and then assembled here

Is made in America better than assembled in America? It is rare to see any company make everything vertically integrated within the United States. Price does impact pride, but if the product will last there is justification. Brand names alone shouldn't be a tax but a reputation.

But what exactly does this mean?

PSA for my O Bros: Brazil buys are taxing (literally) 😭

Time has gone by since my first post and, yeah, tariffs cooked our wallets. HOWEVER I'll give credit that these fees are at least bringing in a substantial revenue to our unimaginable deficit… but not here to talk politics.

ANYWAYS... what changed (and why it hurts)
  • The De Minimis Exception (duty-free for packages < $800) is no longer valid
  • Now shipments are taxed by country, per Uncle Sam’s country-to-country tariffs
  • Brazil imports = ~50% tariff
    • Packages declared as gifts < $100 can be duty-free, but risky (do this at your own risk)

My test run: I'm a huge PIET fan so I wanted to confirm this by buying some items and can say this is legit 😭😭😭
  • I bought 8 items of clothing/shoes that I sent to my business partner to forward the package
  • Items were declared as: used clothes – personal use | value = $400 USD (~R$2,200)
    • If bought/shipped straight from the store: $800 USD value
  • Could NOT use the local post office (shipments paused), so USPS wasn’t an option
  • Went with DHL (my preference: quicker & safer, but more expensive 😒)
    • Shipping cost = $175 USD
  • Customs taxable base: $400 (declared value) + $175 (shipping) = $575 USD
  • DHL acted as customs broker and sent a bill for ~$280 USD (see screenshot)
    • All-in total: $400 + $175 + ~$280 = ~$855 USD 😭😭😭
    • If we declared full price USD value it would have been = $800 + $175 + ≈$500 = $1375 USD 🥴😱

  1. So what should O Bros do?

    1. Wait it out until Brazil & US make up and tariffs (hopefully) drop.
Good news on the horizon… maybe:
Brazil set to talk tariffs with US on Thursday
    2. Can’t wait? Be ready to pay extra—plan for the ~50% tariff plus shipping/broker fees.
  2. For my O Bro resellers (because I don’t hate lol and always support people's side hustles to make their coin... 🫡 )

    1. If you already have Brazil stock in your inventory, price accordingly if you want now that items are harder and more expensive to acquire

Final prayer 🙏

I’m praying, hoping, crossing my fingers and testicles Trump and Brazil President make up & kiss so that the 50% fee lowers before the Piet x Oakley drop at the end of the year—otherwise it’s gonna cost a liver to get the whole collection
-----------------------------------

TL;DR

De minimis is gone. Brazil → US is getting hit with ~50% tariffs (on value + shipping). My $400 Piet package became ~$840 via DHL. Either wait for potential relief or budget for the pain

That is such a shame. Tariffs killed a lot of hobbies.
