X-Metal replica perception/ thoughts

Replicate and selling them as legitimate?? Is one thing. I mean can it be done?? With 100% accuracy?? Titanium and all that?? I would give you props though if you can, just don’t put a serial on it. I would order 5 pennies now for 200 each 🤣😅🤣😅
Hahahaha well with titanium I would need a really robust system to get that hot, the melting temp is around ~3000 Fahrenheit. Maybe a titanium aluminum alloy. The one used in the X metals was a 5 metal alloy and mostly titanium. But I could do any gold, silver, copper, aluminum, or bronze with a typical hobby set up. Selling them as legitimate Oakley product was never the goal, but maybe as a compatible aftermarket kit or replacement system. A $300 real silver Penny could be feasible tho

The naysayers are clueless … try 3D scanning and making a model that is capable of being SLS printed using Titanium powder is not for the faint of heart of heart.

You will need access to a $30k scanner and a $300k SLS printer to achieve the resolution needed … find a friend at SpaceX or university resource.

There won’t be any “infringement” on Oakley as they shut the plant and don’t provide any help to the folks who currently use the product … Luxotica customer service inadequacy is only rivaled by Ford, and the Biden administration.

Yea it’s not cheep, but making copies devalues the originals.

Lux 3D printed Juliets and Romeos a few years ago and charged $14,000 for the two.

I go back and forth on this kinda question as well. Some good points made here…I’d say technically “lenses” make the sunglasses, sunglasses. Heck that’s the whole point of sunglasses…ain’t it?

But for me titanium frames make the X-Metals my top personal favorite among my Oakley collection…and add that extra something MARS have…I’m drinking that Kool-Aide 👽🤙

IMHO Lenses, Screws, Nose Pins, etc., etc., etc. are consumables as noted by others. I’m incredibly grateful for the high quality aftermarket companies and artists here who’ve filled the gap left by Oakley.

But…I’ve snapped two Valve 1.0 right side lugs this last week. When no more are to be found…I’d sure want the “option” of a replacement part if I could.

Also I’m really curious about replacement parts for X-Metals. I also zapped a Juliet left orbital this week. Good luck finding a Juliet left orbital or a replacement nose bridge these days.

Replacements would be nice…and fun to try different metals…silver, copper. But it is a slippery slope that will always be taken advantage of by “someone.”

🪖👍

The moral question aside of if it “should” be done. With the right equipment and it could be done on some level…one of my first retirement hobbies was props and prop replicas. 3D modeled and printed and some CNC woodwork. I supplied years of Princess SWAG to my Grandaughter through her Princess years (most often stuff that was just not available via Disney proper)…and just for fun for myself, family, and friends on other stuff. But I absolutely never sell anything and am very protective of my models as I don’t want em getting into the wild to be sold either as replicas or worse as fake originals. I also respect the Intellectual Property of Disney.

Non-Controversial Example: This is the sternboard of the whaler Mary and Susan. Saw it in a museum in New England. So I replicated it via photogrammetry. Made myself a buckle and the Wife a pin.

Course it’s a far cry between that and a MARS frame 😏. But the right equipment…🤔
